Your First American Mah Jongg Game: A Complete Walkthrough

This walkthrough connects the full beginner course. Keep the current card beside your rack and use this sequence as a table-side guide.

1. Prepare the Table

Confirm that the set contains the required tiles, Jokers, racks, dice, and any preferred accessories. Seat four players and choose East. Then shuffle, build the walls, and deal according to your table’s rules. East begins with 14 tiles; the others begin with 13.

2. Read the Rack, Then the Card

Sort enough to see suits, pairs, Flowers, Winds, and Dragons. Scan likely card sections and shortlist two overlapping hands. Do not announce your target.

3. Complete the Charleston

Pass tiles that help neither candidate while protecting pairs, rare natural requirements, and flexible combinations. Reevaluate after every pass. Your direction may change as useful tiles arrive.

4. Begin Normal Play

East makes the first discard. Thereafter, a normal turn is:

  • Draw from the live wall.
  • Count and compare with the card.
  • Make a legal Joker exchange if available.
  • Discard one tile and name it clearly.

5. Decide Whether to Call

Suppose another player discards a tile completing a required Kong in your X hand. You may call it, display the full Kong, then discard. If your line is C, keep drawing instead unless that discard completes Mah Jongg.

On your turn, if an exposed group contains a Joker and you hold its matching natural tile, make the exchange under your table’s procedure. Put the natural tile into the exposure and take the Joker into your hand. Review the Joker guide before play.

7. Complete and Verify the Hand

When a draw or discard appears to finish your hand, pause. Count 14 tiles and match every grouping, suit relationship, natural single or pair, Joker, and X/C requirement to one line. Announce “Mah Jongg” and display the hand for verification.

Do not measure success only by winning. A successful first game means you complete the setup, Charleston, turn sequence, calls, and verification without losing track of the card or tile count.
