Mistakes are part of learning, but the same few errors cause most beginner confusion. Use this list as a pre-game refresher.
Jokers cannot be passed during the Charleston. Keep them and review How to Use Jokers.
One attractive pair is not enough. Keep two overlapping possibilities until your rack and incoming tiles provide stronger evidence. Use the process in How to Choose a Hand.
Pairs are natural-only requirements and can be difficult to rebuild. Before passing or discarding one tile, scan for lines that use the pair.
A C hand cannot make ordinary exposures. Check X or C before every call; see Exposed vs. Concealed Hands.
Place the tile clearly and say its name. This helps all players recognize the discard and respond within the proper timing.
Jokers substitute only in eligible groups of three or more identical tiles. Required singles and pairs must be natural.
You normally cannot call a discard simply to form a pair. You may call it if that tile immediately completes a legal Mah Jongg hand.
Every winning tile must match one complete line. Similar-looking pieces from two hands cannot be combined. Learn to read each line from left to right.
Count exposures as part of your hand. Normally you draw to 14 and discard back to 13. Stop and ask if the count looks wrong.
Pause for the full verification: 14 tiles, one line, correct suits and grouping sizes, legal Jokers, and the correct X/C status. Follow How to Declare Mah Jongg.
Before every discard: count, compare, and name the tile. Before every call: check the card line and X/C label. Before every win: verify all 14 tiles.
